ST. JAMES — St. James lost the core of its 2011 Class 3A state championship roster entering the past season, including the services of now-Nebraska standout Brandi Jeffrey.
But the Wildcats wouldn’t slink into obscurity. Korielle Tucker was one big reason why.
The efforts of St. James’ top scorer was noticed, as the senior was named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State team this week.
It is the first time Tucker has been selected to the squad.
Wildcat teammates Dasha Adams and Shakira Braxton were each named honorable mention.
Tucker averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds this season for SJH, all the while adding stellar defensive play as one of the lynchpins of the Wildcats’ ferocious press.
St. James coach Greg Wood said that Tucker’s quickness was an asset that she and the Wildcats took advantage of.
“She’s very quick going to the goal,” said Wood. “She utilized her speed all year long and defenders had a tough time staying with her. She also had a great year defensively. And she did a strong job on the boards, something we really needed from her since we had a smaller team.”
This was Wood’s first season with St. James, taking over for departed coach Justin Adams. He said that he did not immediately know the kind of impact Tucker would make — she got to him a bit later due to her role on the volleyball team — but that it didn’t take her long to settle things.
“I’d say about the third game, it became clear to me that we needed her on the floor,” said Wood. “She made a big impact … I’m very happy for Korielle. She’s an extremely hard-worker. I thought all three of our seniors were deserving, and I’m glad to see one of them honored.” ƽ
