LAPLACE – With meat off limits on Friday for most Catholics during the Lenten season, various churches and other organizations in the region often conduct community a weekly fish fry as a fundraiser that also helps area Catholics stick to tradition.

“It keeps us active in the community,” said Ascension of Our Lord Knights of Columbus member Ray Robertson. Robertson and the rest of the Knights operate a weekly Lenten fish fry in the LaPlace church’s parking lot, located at 1809 Greenwood Drive, from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For a donation of $8 for an adult plate or $6 for a child’s plate, Robertson said residents can enjoy a plate of fish, Cajun boiled corn and potatoes and a bag of cookies.

“Just drive up, and we will serve up what you want,” Robertson said. “All of us here have been doing it for several years.”

Other options for fish dinners in St. John the Baptist Parish include Our Lady of Grace Church of Reserve, which sponsors seafood lunches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Knights of Peter Claver Hall on 29th Street in Reserve. The cost is $8.

St. Peter Church in Reserve is holding a drive-through fish fry each Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the portico of the church on River Road in Reserve. The cost is $7. Fried fish, vegetable, salad, bread and dessert are served.

In Edgard, St. John the Baptist Church is selling Friday fried fish lunches beginning at 11 a.m. in the community center. The cost is $7.

In St. Charles Parish, the Knights of Columbus Red Church Council 3634 is selling fish fry dinners every Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Spruce Street in Norco. The cost is $8.

Also, the St. Rose Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary is sponsoring a fish and shrimp fry each Friday at the station, 123 St. Rose Ave. Lunches are sold from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and dinners are sold from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.  The cost is $9 for an entree or $11 for a combo plate.
