The 4-year-old students at Wee Care Preschool visited Matherne’s in LaPlace as part of their studies of the community helpers grocer and baker. Students from Tricia Lowry’s Food Science class at St. Charles High School assisted in the field trip. Upon entering Matherne’s, the students were greeted by Scott Schwaibold, the store manager. Schwaibold took the children on a tour of the produce department, meat department and bakery department. Shakiva McClain, cake decorator, showed the children how she makes pretty flowers to decorate cakes.
