Reflecting on the past, looking toward the future

The Bible says in James 4:14, “…whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”

That verse really got my attention as I celebrate my 77th birthday today, September 21st. I consider myself a positive person, an attitude that was passed on to me by my father, who died at age 48.

I try to focus on the present and look forward to an exciting future, not knowing what it holds but knowing that God holds my future. I don’t live in the past but have to admit that I reflect on it, especially on my birthday.

I, like many people, have experienced the good times and the not-so-good times. Today, I thank God for every trial that He allowed me to go through. No, I didn’t enjoy any of them but am so grateful that He was with me every step of the way to make me a better person.

As I reminisce on the past, I’ve had a blessed life with great parents who provided all of my needs, a great community to grow up in with good schools and excellent teachers and the freedom that goes with being an American.

With all of that for which to be thankful, God continued with His blessings. I have a God-fearing, forgiving wife who loves me unconditionally and four unselfish children who respect and honor Jeanne

and me. I am also thankful for my

15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren (expecting two

more).

With all of that, He has honored and trusted me with the privilege of being a laborer in His ministry of Get High on Life.

At age 77, I realize the future holds one thing for certain – physical death. “When this happens,

then at last this Scripture will

come true – “Death is swallowed up in victory,” O death, where then your victory? Where then your sting? For sin – the sting that causes death – will all be gone; and the law, which reveals our sins, will no longer be our judge. How we thank God for all of this! It is he who makes us victorious through Jesus Christ our Lord!” I Corinthians 15:54-57.
