Helen Alice Cavitt Cannon died July 23, 2011. She was born in Washington, D.C., on June 21, 1949, to August L. Cavitt Jr. and Alice C. Cavitt.

Helen is survived by her mother and two of three siblings, Ann C. Neagle and Peter D. Cavitt. The third, William T. Cavitt, predeceased her by eight years. She is also survived by her daughter, Kristina M. Cannon, her granddaughter, Jade L. Cannon, and her life partner of the last 19 years, John Robert.

She was married to U.S. Airforce Sergeant John Louis Cannon III on April 30, 1972, and widowed on June 22, 1975. She worked for Oreck Corporation and then for Universal Sodexo, Safety Division. In her life, she achieved membership in the order of Phi Theta Kappa and graduated with honors from Delgado Community College of New Orleans in safety administration. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader, as well as an amateur nature photographer, her images appearing in the WYES art auctions in the mid 1980s to early 1990s. She was very patriotic, and loved yellow roses. Her cremated remains are to be planted with a yellow rose bush and kept by her daughter.

There will be a memorial service and gathering at the First United Methodist Church of LaPlace, located at 301 Bamboo Road, on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, beginning with the church service at 5 p.m., and the gathering with refreshments after, at 5:45 p.m., for all friends and family.
