LAPLACE – Louisiana’s sale tax holiday weekend begins Friday, Aug. 5, at 12:01 a.m. and ends Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11:59 p.m.

During this time, residents are exempt from state tax when buying “tangible personal property” items, such as clothing and household items, up to $2,500 per item.

The items must be for non-business use.

The sales tax exemption will apply to purchases made during the sales tax weekend if:

• Possession of the item is taken immediately.

• The purchase is put in layaway.

• The purchase is already in layaway but paid off during the tax free weekend.

• The purchase is made during the tax free weekend but the store couldn’t deliver the item immediately.

The holiday does not apply to the purchase of vehicles, meals and most services.

Local sales taxes will still apply in St. John and St. James parishes. St. Charles will waive its parish sales taxes for the weekend.
