Airline Highway down to one lane near Spillway

NORCO – The right eastbound lane of Airline Highway near the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St. Charles Parish is closed indefinitely while a public works crew builds a temporary levee on the shoulder of the road.

Parish officials said the temporary levee is being built at the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a precaution to keep water off the roadway in that area. Parish spokesperson Renee Simpson said the levee was planned during preparations to open the spillway.

Simpson said the water coming through the spillway tends to pool up in the corner near the bridge because of a lack of flow. There is presently no water near the road and no threat of the road being topped.

It is not clear how long the lane will be closed. Simpson said the levee is still under construction, but the road could be closed until the levee is removed.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution through the area and be on the lookout for workers during construction.
