Destin Vicknair, Sophomore, Riverside
St. John Parish MVP
MVP District 9-2A
Although only a sophomore, Vicknair just completed her third season as Rebels’ starting pitcher and established herself as one of the most dominating players in the state both in the circle and at the plate. She helped lead Riverside to the top seed in the state softball tournament and a semifinal appearance in Class 2A, finishing the season with a 25-3 record and an ERA of 0.64. She struck out 162 batters. She was also adapt at helping generate her own run support, batting .544 (On-Base Percentage of .615) with five home runs and 42 RBIs. Vicknair figures to only get better from here, and the Rebels have two more seasons to see her develop further.
Coach’s Quote: “She did a great job all year long for us on the mound and also a tremendous job with her bat. She learned as the year went on to be patient since teams would try to pitch away from her, to walk her … but it’s always a good feeling to have a bat like her’s in your lineup and a pitcher like her backing it up.” – Riverside coach Kristy Hebert.
Katie Bailey, Sophomore, Riverside
All-District 9-2A
Bailey was a tremendous two-way player in 2011. She was strong with both her bat (.438 average, .471 on-base, three home runs and 34 RBIs), but also behind the plate as the team’s catcher, throwing out 12 of 17 base runners who tried to steal against Riverside. As her reputation grew, fewer teams tried to run.
Coach’s Quote: “She earned the respect of opposing coaches last year and at the beginning of this one … they didn’t run as much as they ordinarily would. She’s got a good glove and protected back there well. She’s been really solid for us all-around.” – Riverside coach Kristy Hebert.
Taylor Terrio, Sophomore, Riverside
All-District 9-2A
Speed is the first thing that comes to mind when describing Terrio’s game, be it as the Rebels’ leadoff hitter or her play in centerfield. She hit .490, got on base .56 percent of the time, stole 23 bases in 24 attempts and scored 44 runs while playing standout defense (.964 fielding percentage) all the while.
Coach’s Quote: “Obviously, she covered a lot of ground in the outfield for us. She has that speed already and gets a great jump on the ball. She takes away a lot of plays that look like they’re going to be base hits. Te way she was able to consistently get on base and put pressure on was a big key to our offense.” – Riverside coach Kristy Hebert.
Shea LaFountain, Senior, Riverside
All-District 9-2A
LaFountain hit .395 (.446 OBP) with two home runs and 28 runs scored despite missing three weeks of the season due to injury. She successfully converted from outfielder to second baseman this season and provided steady defense in the infield. In her final season, she combined with Taylor Terrio at the top of the order to set up fast starts time and time again.
Coach’s Quote: “She did her job at the plate, no matter what we needed from her. She put it in play, bunted, moved runners over. Her consistency is why we batted her leadoff late in the season … she was one of our hottest bats in that stretch.” – Riverside coach Kristy Hebert
Tahj Howard, Sophomore, West St. John
All-District 8-1A
Howard was one of the Rams’ most lethal hitters and their best fielder as she manned third base. At cleanup, Howard hit .636 with 20 RBIs. She stole 15 bases and had two home runs, three doubles and four triples, contributing to a .500 slugging percentage.
Coach’s Quote: “She’s just so competitive. Every time she hit’s the field that’s the case, and she’s always looking for ways to get better. She’s a special player for us. Taj is definitely my best fielder. Teams typically wouldn’t bunt to her side, and if she fielded it, it usually ended in an out.” – West St. John coach Brandon Dumas.
Megan Louque, Senior, St. Charles
All-District 9-2A
Louque pitched every game for the Comets this season after pitching the Comets into the state final last season, and came through with a 22-6 record and a 1.82 ERA. She leaves St. Charles with the all-time single season home run record with six. She batted .452 with 35 RBIs and a .798 slugging percentage.
Coach’s Quote: “Early on, she had to adapt to the realization that she was our only pitcher with any high school experience. Once she got over that culture shock, she did a great job. The single season home run mark, and also right there in strikeouts … she had a season to be proud of.” – St. Charles coach Ty Monica.
Jaymie Remondet, Senior, St. Charles
All-District 9-2A
Remondet was one of the Comets’ senior leaders and provided a strong bat and a slick glove at third base. She hit .368 with two home runs, seven doubles and 22 RBIs with a .445 OBP. Her season was highlighted by a key late-innings home run against eventual No. 2 seed Curtis that gave SCC a 6-3 win and a season split with their rival.
Coach’s Quote: “I’m not sure her numbers do justice to what she brought to our team. She’s the epitome of a clutch hitter, someone you want up there in a key situation. When you need that big hit, need to move the runner over, leave it to her. She led by example.” – St. Charles coach Ty Monica.
Emily Triche, Freshman, St. Charles
All District 9-2A
Only a freshman, Triche had a strong season as the Comets’ cleanup hitter with a .387 batting average and a .472 on base percentage. But where she truly turned heads was in the field, where at shortstop she committed just one error in 88 chances.
Coach’s Quote: “When you’re talking about someone who just makes on error on 88 attempts … and we’re talking about shortstop, handling grounders and things like that, it’s huge. To be a freshman and step up like that, it was a banner year. For anyone, that’s strong.” – St. Charles coach Ty Monica.
Kati Duhe, Junior, St. Charles
All-District 9-2A
Duhe’s diving catch in center to begin the Comets’ regional round playoff game set the tone for an 8-0 win over Sterlington and a trip to Sulphur. Duhe hit .414 with a .490 on-base percentage and scored 30 runs while playing stellar defense in the outfield.
Coach’s Quote: “She’s a great all-around athlete. Having her out in centerfield takes a lot of pressure off our other outfielders. We had confidence in her defensively and in her bat. She came through for us all season.” – St. Charles coach Ty Monica.
Jasmine Brown, Senior, East St. John
All-District 6-5A
ESJ’s veteran catcher hit third for ESJ coach Monica Hebert in each of the last four years and finished with a .360 batting average, including a .352 mark in a stellar District 6-5A field that included four of the top eight seeds in Class 5A (including eventual state champ Hahnville).
Coach’s Quote: “She’s just a great kid who was the leader of our team this season, especially in the way she carried herself. She’s a big loss who we’ll certainly miss. After four years, a lot of teams pitched away from her. And as a catcher, she’s definitely stood out for us, this year and in the past.” – East St. John coach Monica Hebert.
