LaPlace – In the spirit of giving back, the LaPlace Lions Club recently served the community by offering a free glaucoma screening. The annual volunteer activity attracted nearly 30 residents to Matherne’s Supermarket, where the screenings took place. The LaPlace Lions Club and the Lions Clubs International Foundations perform the routine screenings annually in the St. John Parish community in an effort to eliminate preventable blindness in the United States and around the world.
The LaPlace Lions Club has over 60 members and meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at Italian Pie on Belle Terre Blvd. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.
In addition to the eye screenings, the LaPlace Lions Clubs organizes the Du Monde Parade and carnival balls, hands out Thanksgiving and Easter baskets to the needy and assists Keep St. John Beautiful in their efforts.
