Start every morning with God

The way a person spends his or her day depends on their attitude and how they spend the first few minutes. Proverbs 8:17 says, “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.”

A 12-step program I participated in suggested, in the third step, that you turn your will and cares over to God as you understand Him. It’s amazing that when I seek Him early and turn my life over to His care, I have a good day, free from worry and anxieties, knowing He is in control of everything.

Over the last year, I decided to spend the first part of my morning with Him, before reading the newspaper and letting the negative world news set the tempo for my day. I start with singing songs to myself, such as “This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Another is “Oh Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made. I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. My God, How Great Thou Art.”

I end my short, silent worship with, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.” In this dark world, one only needs a little light to get people’s attention.

I then read the Bible and pray for my family, friends and others that God lays on my heart. When I start the day with this routine, I feel strong and at peace knowing God’s got my back. If that works, why then would I neglect to do what is a proven plan for a successful day? The answer is simple! Being human and wanting to be in control, I decide to try it my way. Maybe my morning worship should include, “I Surrender All.”
