LAPLACE – Parkview Baptist may have handed St. Charles its first loss of the season last week, but the Comets rebounded Monday morning to defeat Destrehan in a pitcher’s duel, 1-0, at St. Charles.

Katie Terrio’s RBI double plated the winning run in the fifth inning.

Megan Louque pitched a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and walking three. She struck out eight Wildcats (4-6).

Terrio’s double came after back-to-back singles by Jaymie Remondet and Emily Triche.

Terrio finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

The Comets (6-1) finished with 10 hits and drew two walks.

SCC coach Ty Monica said he was pleased with his team’s ability to respond to the Parkview Baptist loss, citing it as a good sign coming from such a young team.

But he also noted that the Comet offense left too many baserunners on.

“That part of it was very disappointing, to have 12 baserunners and only one run,” he said. “In four of the six innings that we hit, we had a runner on third that didn’t score. But we’ll take the win. It’s like they say, an ugly win is better than a pretty loss.”

At the same time, he reiterated that his players corrected a number of things from the Parkview loss.

“We came back to practice after Parkview and worked on some things, and we corrected those issues against Destrehan. It shows they’re able to learn from their mistakes and move forward,” Monica said.

Parkview’s 5-0 win over St. Charles last Thursday came on a day that Parkview (5-3) hammered out 13 hits. Parkview led 2-0 after two innings and 4-0 after four.

“They hit it better than any team I’ve seen this season,” said St. Charles coach Ty Monica. “We knew ahead of time that their team always swings it extremely well. Even their outs were hard ones. There were no easy outs, at all. They were probably intent on returning the favor from when we went up there last year and beat them, and they were able to.”

The Comets did, however, get a big rivalry victory earlier that week when it defeated Lutcher (1-5-1), 4-2. SCC erased a 2-1 Lutcher lead in the seventh inning when Kati Duhe’s single brought two runners home, including the go-ahead run.

Karli Terrio’s single plated Duhe for an insurance run.

Monica said that next week will provide a stiff test as St. Charles gets into district action against teams that should vie for the 10-2A crown: Riverside and John Curtis.

He said that he’s glad to be 6-1, but that if he had to give his team an honest grade to this point, it would be a “C,” citing he believes the team is capable of playing at a much higher level.

“Right now, there are things that I thought we’d do well that we just aren’t doing well,” he said. “And then there are things that I didn’t think we’d be very good at that we’re doing a great job in.

“We’ve got two huge district games upcoming. And I don’t feel like we’re ready, yet. The hope is that we can stay close enough and that when we’re playing our best softball, ideally in the second round of district, that we’re in striking distance.”
