The Friends of St. John Library recently met to elect officers and approve funds for library programs to be held in 2011.
Officers elected for 2011 are President Mary Duhe, Vice President David Egudin, Secretary Randy DeSoto and Treasurer Sheela Jambotkar.
Randy DeSoto, director of St. John Parish Library, thanked FOL for help in with special projects in 2010 including: $150 for the Reserve 150th anniversary celebration lectures, author Daniel Rasmussen’s presentation and the February 2011 lecture by Dr. Raphael Cassimere Jr.
Roberta August, Central Branch supervisor, said the Library’s Prime Time program was a success. As many as 18 families participated during a single session. David Egudin recruited several Hispanic families to participate in the program.
August said the Wii program is popular and plans to offer Wii Fit for adults as well as games for children and teens. Monthly movies and popcorn will be continued.
FOL members unanimously approved requests for funds for the Summer Reading Club incentives, rewards and supplies; the Reserve Branch open house; Staff Appreciation and Training Day; and calendars for 2012.
DeSoto announced that “The Louisiana Purchase: Impact and Legacy,” a six-week Readings in Literature and Culture program
will be held in 2011.These six-
week thematic series are led by university scholars who introduce the books and lead group discussions. Sessions are free and open to the public.
It was also noted that Book Sale Friday, begun in January, is a success. August said each Friday books are available for purchase in the Central Branch in LaPlace individually or $1 per bag. She said one school brought students to buy books.
A book sale to be held in conjunction with the Andouille Festival was discussed, and DeSoto said he would check with St. John Parish to see if the atrium in the community center will be available.
The sale of used books and other media is the main source of funds the FOL provides for the library. Books may be donated at any branch.
August presented a color brochure she created for the FOL that is available at all branches of the library. Jambotkar thanked August and said the brochure should encourage patrons to join FOL.
“It is a good way to support the library,” Jambotkar said.
