St. Charles split two home games last week, blowing out Haynes, 72-36, Tuesday but falling to John Curtis, 57-44, Friday night.

Curtis’ Malik Morgan led all scorers with 26 points in Friday’s game. John Williams led the Comets with 24 points. Taylor Peytavin scored eight and Harley Scioneaux added seven.

Curtis led 32-27 at halftime and pushed their lead to 10 after three, 44-34.

“It came down to their defensive play,” said St. Charles coach Chris Perrone. “They’ve got a deep bench and numerous guards and they just keep sending them at you, pressing, a run and jump style. Defend, defend, defend. And that’s what caused us to unravel. They force three or four turnovers in a stretch and get easy layups. If we had 24 turnovers, they probably legitimately forced 18 of them.”

Perrone said Curtis also did a good job on the boards, not allowing the Comets many offensive rebounding opportunities.

“They did a good job holding us to one shot,” said Perrone. “We went cold in the third quarter, scoring just seven. Shots just became tougher for us to make.”

Williams led the way in the rout against Haynes, scoring a game-high 28 points. Peytavin added 14 for the Comets.

St. Charles stands at 11-12 overall, 1-2 in District 9-2A play.
