On Jan. 18, the Elite Ladies Club at Emily C. Watkins Elementary had its bi-monthly meeting. This meeting was extra-special to the girls because the guest speaker was Dr. Courtney Millet, superintendent of St. John the Baptist Parish Schools. Akira Miles recited an inspiration poem by Mother Teresa and Millet was introduced by elite lady, Neya Smith.

Millet shared her experiences with the members, her decision to became an educator, her vision of what a school is about, and three steps toward personal growth that will transcend their life time. She instructed them to do the following: keep a daily journal to write their thoughts, ideas, and/or frustrations, always read at least four books per year for pleasure, and reach out to others – do at least one nice thing each day.

Millet shared how her love for education was modeled and encouraged by her mother as an educator. At the conclusion of her discussion, Millet went a step further. Instead of only explaining the purposes for having a journal, she presented each member with her own personal journal to keep their thoughts, ideas and suggestions.
