LAPLACE – The last month has been an exceptionally turbulent one when it comes to violent crime in the River Parishes, with Sheriff’s deputies in St. John and St. Charles Parishes each investigating a rare homicide.

Although it has been fairly uncommon, the threat of violent crime still persists and many in the region believe that the best way to combat the recent spike is with increased police presence and stricter and harsher penalties for offenders.

Visitors to www.lobservateur.com last week were asked what they think is the best way to make the area safer from violent crimes.

More than 30 percent of those who voted said increased police presence is the best solution, while another 28 percent said stricter laws and harsher penalties is the best way to send a strong message.

A complete breakdown of the results follows below:

• 32 percent of respondents chose “Increased police presence.”

• 28 percent of respondents chose “Stricter laws/harsher penalties.”

• 24 percent of respondents chose “More parental involvement.”

• 15 percent of respondents chose “Increased neighborhood awareness.”

• 1 percent of respondents chose “Anti-violence education initiatives.”

This week’s question: “With the recent drop in temperatures, what is your favorite way to keep warm on cold nights?”
