Gonzales – Ascension Community Theatre will hold auditions for its 2011 musical comedy, “Nunsense,” on Dec. 10 and 12 at 823 Felicity St., Gonzales. Vocal auditions will take place starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, by appointment only, with choreography and additional readings taking place at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12.

Director Cody Ikerd would like those auditioning to prepare a 16- to 32-bar comedic selection from the musical theatre repertoire. Vocal audition appointments can be made either by calling Assistant Director Michael Mason at 225-964-6998 or via e-mail at Nunsense@me.com.

This show follows the “Little Sisters of Hoboken,” who find themselves in a financial panic when the Convent cook inadvertently poisons 52 sisters. To raise the funds for their interment, the remaining sisters put on a variety show that results in one of the wackiest musical comedies that will leave you laughing all the way to the confessional. This multi-award winning musical, including Best Off-Broadway Musical, has become an international phenomenon.

Featuring a book, lyrics and music by Dan Goggin, “Nunsense” will run Feb. 24 – 27 and March 3 – 5. Director Cody Ikerd is looking for five women to fill the following roles:

• Sister Mary Regina (Mother Superior) is the head the Little Sisters of Hoboken Convent. Stern and sincere, Mother Superior is responsible for keeping the convent together. However, behind her reserved façade, she has a secret desire to be a star. We learn that Mother Superior’s fun side is just as wild and crazy as the rest of the Sisters. Part requires very physical and improvisation comedy and an Irish accent is preferred but not required. Voice: mezzo, Dance: light-to-moderate.

• Sister Mary Hubert is in charge of the novices and second-in-command to Mother Superior. Her passion for power leads to constant competition with Mother Superior. She exudes maternal wisdom to the novices but loves to let loose. Part requires great comedic timing and sultry singing. Voice: mezzo/belter, Dance: moderate, with heavy tap.

• Sister Mary Amnesia has, as the name suggests, suffered memory loss as the result of a crucifix falling on her head. As Mother Superior describes, she’s a “pretty house, but no one’s home.” She often slips in-and-out of coherence, but has fun along the journey. Part requires classical and country style singing, with the potential for ventriloquism. Voice: soprano/belter, Dance: light-to-moderate, with tap preferred.

• Sister Robert Anne is the “street wise” Sister whose jokester attitude often finds her in Mother Superior’s crosshairs. She has always wanted to be a star, but never receives the opportunity. Part requires a strong Brooklyn accent and a slapstick comedy. Voice: mezzo, Dance: light-to-moderate, with tap preferred.

• Sister Mary Leo is the newest Sister to the Convent. As the novice nun, she is still learning the way and coming to terms with her new decision to give up her “civilian” life. She has a passion for the ballet and strives to become the first ballerina nun. Voice: mezzo, Dance: moderate-to-heavy, with pointe/ballet required.
