Churchill’s words still inspire today

Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of Great Britain during the Second World War, is credited with helping the United States defeat the Germans. He was a statesman and a writer and was considered one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century.

One of his most memorable speeches was given in a few short minutes, as Hitler and his Nazi Party were on the verge of controlling Europe, using only three words. The members of Parliament were anxiously awaiting his words of wisdom as he approached the podium. His message to the governing bodies in need of a plan to defeat the enemy was simply – “Never give up. Never give up. Never give up.” In closing, he repeated the same words, “Never give up.” With those words, his famous speech was finished.

Recently, a TV evangelist started his sermon with the following quote from Churchill: “We make a living by what we get. We get a life by what we give.”

As I grow older, I’m more concerned about having a life. God has always supplied my family with everything we needed but not necessarily with everything we wanted.

When I was younger and getting everything I needed to make a

good living, my hunger was for fame, comfort, wealth and power.

All of these things, I realize now, cause as many problems as they solve. Our souls are hungry for meaning. We want our lives to matter.

I believe that when we die, we will either leave a mark or a stain for people to remember. If I had died 35 years ago when I was more concerned about getting than giving, I would have left a stain on my family. I’m forever grateful that God, in His mercy, gave me a chance to mend my ways.

Today, as a laborer in God’s ministry of Get High on Life, He has given me an opportunity to give freely to others what He has given me. Because of this, I have a life.

Winston Churchill’s words to Parliament during the war are

fitting today for anyone who wants to get a life. We must never give up – never give up in satisfying the hunger in our souls to have a purposeful meaning in this life.
