Shaine Hymel with the Garyville Fire Department graduated from the Fire Academy at Louisiana State University Fire and Emergency Training Institute, after completing a 14-week program.
The Firefighter I and II course – 400 hours – (commonly referred to as the recruit academy) was designed to recruit firefighters. The school is taught under the same paramilitary chain of command used by today’s fire departments. Participants receive classroom instruction and practical experience, along with vigorous physical fitness and live fire training exercises. The material covered fulfills the requirements for Firefighter I and II as per National Fire Protection Act 1001, “Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.” The course also covers hazardous materials training at the Awareness and Operational Level per NFPA 472 “Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents.” They also fulfill the requirements for DOT State First Responder Curriculum.
Participants received extensive live fire training which provided them with hands-on training and experience that will assist in developing advanced skills in all aspects of firefighting.
