LAPLACE – For those lucky enough to be able to escape the summer heat in an air-conditioned space, it can be easy to forget there are some families that cannot afford such luxuries. The St. James Parish-based First Class Ladies Social Club hopes to alleviate the situation somewhat with their latest endeavor.

The group plans to hold its first Fan Drive July 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lemanville Park next to Buena Vista Baptist Church in Ascension Parish.

“Not everyone can afford a fan. Not everyone can afford air conditioning,” said member Deshanna Batiste.

Batiste explained the idea for the fan drive came from fellow club member Latanya Anderson.

The club is currently seeking donations, which can be in either the form of a fan or money to be used to purchase fans.
