LAPLACE – A 14-year-old boy suffered a severe head injury Saturday after falling off the hood of a moving car, according to a release from the St. John th Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The boy, whose name was not released, was transported to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace for treatment and was later transferred to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, said Capt. Dane Clement, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office. Clement said the boy remained hospitalized Monday in critical condition.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of North Sugar Ridge Road in LaPlace. Clement said the 14-year-old and a 16-year-old boy were riding on the hood of a Chrysler 300 traveling northbound on North Sugar Ridge when the 14-year-old fell off the side.

Clement said the driver, 17-year-old Toyin Bailey, told deputies he was giving the boys a short ride up the street. The 14-year-old boy’s sister was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Authorities do not believe alcohol or speed were factors in this accident.

Clement said charges against the driver are pending police investigation.
