Students at Paulina Elementary were treated to a special musical guest recently. Johnette Downing, a multi-award winning author, singer, songwriter and musician, performed for kindergarten, first-, second-, and third-graders.

Downing has written several books about Louisiana and shares them with the students by using music Students were engaged through her guitar playing and singing while encouraging the students to sing aloud using visual aids from her books. Several students and teachers were able to go on stage and help out during the performance.

Downing’s books introduce students to Louisiana traditions, geography and food while bringing in everyday skills such as counting. Downing’s performance was made available through a grant awarded by the River Parish Arts and Humanities Council written by third-grade teacher Jenny Poche.
