GARYVILLE — Authorities at Marathon Petroleum are investigating what was described as a “minor incident” Tuesday morning that caused a loud boom near the Garyville refinery.

Robert Calmus, communications manager for Marathon, said the incident, which occurred about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, involved one of the boilers at the recently expanded portion of the refinery. He said two employees suffered minor injuries and were treated on site.

Calmus said the “incident,” which produced a loud boom and a plume of smoke, posed no threat to the community and did not impact operations at the refinery. He said Marathon officials are still investigating the exact cause.
