Monica Brown, master teacher at John L. Ory Magnet School, takes on the persona of Luella Bates Washington Jones as she shares the lesson that Roger learns in Langston Hughes’s short story, “Thank You, M’am” with the sixth-graders in the JLO Gentlemen’s Club. During their weekly lunchtime meeting, the students ultimately tell Brown the story’s moral, people do not just see each of them as sixt-graders, but as the men they’re one day going to become.
