The St. Charles girls basketball team won two games in its Bronze Division third place bracket at the Battle on the Bayou tournament this week before falling in the finals to De La Salle.

The Comets picked up wins over Ridgewood and Academy of Our Lady to advance to the final game.

SCC was 0-2 in pool play, losing to Hosanna Christian and Cabrini.

“I thought we improved as the event went on,” said first year St. Charles coach Kelly Cupit.

“We have a very young squad, and the more games we play, the better we’ll be.”

Dominique DiCarlo scored seven points and Heather Orillion added six in the final game, 43-21 loss to De La Salle

“We really wanted that last one, but after four games we were very tired,” said Cupit. “But I was definitely happy with our hustle. We were down from the beginning of the game, and we still had 100-percent hustle, girls diving on the floor and getting after it.

“That’s the way we need to play, it’s the only way we have a chance.”

In a 36-29 victory over Academy of our Lady, Orillion and Emily Picciola scored 11 each, while Courtney Snyder chimed in with seven for St. Charles (3-3).

SCC pulled ahead in the third quarter, but Academy of our Lady pushed back in the fourth quarter to give the Comets a run for their money.

“We had to step it up at the end,” Cupit said.

SCC had an easier go of it in the opener of bracket play, a 34-18 win over Ridgewood. Picciola led the way with 15 points. Orillion scored eight.

In all, three different players led SCC in scoring at the tourney, and four (including Kacie Braud, who scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the team’s 41-15 win over Lusher in its opener) have done so this year over SCC’s first six games.

“We’re moving the ball around well. We don’t have that one person that we can go to each time,” said Cupit. “Everyone will have to rely on each other, and I think you’ll see a number of different players step up and lead.”

SCC fell in its pool play opener 55-23 to Cabrini. Picciola scored seven to lead SCC. The Comets fell 48-16 to Hosanna Christian. DiCarlo scored 10 to lead her team.
