St. Charles put forth perhaps its most impressive performance of the season on Friday night at Newman, crushing the Greenies 42-13.
St. Charles led by merely a touchdown, 14-7, at halftime. But the Comet defense came up with some timely turnovers that put the offense on a very short field, and each time SCC converted.
SCC defensive back Neil Schexnayder got SCC going early in the second half, intercepting Newman quarterback Ryan Brenner and returning it to the Greenie 3. Marcus Hall took it in on the next play to make it 21-7.
Newman scored on a trick play later in the quarter on a wide receiver pass that went for a 57-yyard score, But St. Charles immediately answered on Hall’s 63-yard touchdown run on its next possession, making it 28-13.
The game broke wide open in the final moments of the third quarter, when Comets defensive lineman Paul Celestine deflected a Brenner pass and intercepted it at the Newman 7. Two plays later, Jeffery Hall was in for a score to make it 35-13.
