West St. John got a rematch a week after falling at home to Ecole Classique, but the result was the same as the Spartans took a non-district win at Ecole Classique, 25-10, 25-19, 25-17 on Wednesday.
Breion Sarapuru led the Rams (3-4) with three digs. Malana Farnell had an ace, and Sarapuru, Ormoni Favorite and Kyla Morris each had a kill.
“A whole lot of little things were wrong for us,” said West St. John coach Valerie Gauthier.
“We weren’t moving, instead we’re waiting for the ball to come to us. I don’t think we played as hard as we needed to.”
Gauthier noted that heat could have been a factor in an Ecole gym she said had no air conditioning.
“I think they let the heat get to them, but as I tried to tell them, no matter how hot it is, you need to go and play,” Gauthier said.
On Thursday, Destrehan notched a win over West St. John by a score of 25-6, 25-3, 25-17 in Edgard.
Alexis Keller had four aces, 17 assists and four digs for DHS (12-3). Liz Chaisson added seven kills for the Wildcats.
Gauthier said she expected a major challenge against Destrehan but that she thought the Rams would answer more definitively.
“They’re having such an excellent season. Destrehan’s a really good team,” said Gauthier.
“But we’ve scrimmaged them before and we fared pretty well. I guess I expected much more.”
Nonetheless, she noted Morris – who was returning from a brief absence due to an ankle injury – and Talar Lewis as two players who stood out for the Rams (3-5) in both games.
“They gave their all. I have to say they’re each playing very, very well,” she said. “They’re stepping up big for our team this season.”
