LAPLACE – Authorities in St. John Parish arrested an Edgard man on attempted first-degree murder charges after he stabbed a Wallace man during an argument over a bicycle Sunday evening, said a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
Patrick Johnson, 23, who was also shot twice during the altercation in question, was taken into custody Tuesday morning after an investigation into the violent incident, said Capt. Dane Clement, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office.
According to a report from the Sheriff’s Office, Johnson and Kayla Rounds, 40, began arguing around 5 p.m. Sunday over a bicycle belonging to Rounds that was found in Johnson’s yard. Clement said Rounds had reported the bike stolen and Sheriff’s deputies returned it to him.
Clement said after deputies returned the bike to Rounds, Johnson went to Rounds’ house, located in the 100 block of West Ninth Street, to confront him about the bike. The Sheriff’s report said the argument eventually turned physical, and at some point in the fight Johnson cut Rounds several times with a folding razor knife. Clement said Rounds sustained cuts to the head and left arm.
The report states that as the fight continued to escalate, Rounds told his wife to get his gun from inside the home. Clement said Rounds took the gun, a .22 long rifle, from his wife and fired two shots at Johnson. Johnson was hit once in the side and once in the buttocks.
Clement said Johnson was transported to LSU Interim Hospital in New Orleans for treatment and was released Monday afternoon before being arrested Tuesday. Johnson was booked into the Sherman Walker Correctional Facility in LaPlace. Clement said a bond hearing is pending for later this week.
Rounds was taken to St. James Hospital, where he was treated and released Sunday evening. Clement said detectives will confer with the district attorney’s office to determine if there will be any charges brought against Rounds.
Deputies were able to recover both the rifle and the razor knife from the scene, according to the release.
