LAPLACE — Authorities in St. John are investigating the unexplained death of a 3-month-old baby girl, who was found unresponsive inside a LaPlace home Monday morning.

Capt. Dane Clement, public information officer for the St. John Sheriff’s Office, said deputies were called out to a home in the 200 block of Somerset Drive where they found the baby lying on her back in a bed where she and her mother were sleeping. Clement said authorities with Acadian Ambulance and the St. John Fire Department tried to revive the girl but were unsuccessful. The coroner pronounced the infant dead at the scene.

A report from the Sheriff’s Office said that the baby’s great-grandfather, who lives at the home, called 911 around 9:04 a.m. Monday. He said the baby had been sleeping in an adult bed with her mother, and when the mother awoke, she found the baby unresponsive.

Clement said investigators did not find anything at the scene to suspect foul play was involved. A preliminary autopsy report, performed Tuesday in New Orleans, confirmed the death remains unclassified.

A toxicology report is still pending.
