STAFF REPORT

LAPLACE – The St. John Sheriff’s Office is once again asking all neighborhoods in the parish to stand together against crime in the community by participating in the 26th annual Night Out Against Crime.

This year’s event, which annually helps strengthen awareness of crime and drug prevention, is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Residents are asked to lock their front doors, turn on their porch and patio lights and visit with the people in their neighborhoods. The National Night Out gives law enforcement agencies and communities a chance to take a joint stand against crime.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents to gather together for neighborhood block parties or cookouts to celebrate the event. According to The National Association of Town Watch, the parties help to generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime groups and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community relationships. They also send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back. Sheriff’s Deputies will be sent out to all parties to join in the festivities and discuss security and crime prevention with residents.

Anyone who wishes to host a party for the Night Out Against Crime should contact the St. John Sheriff’s Office at 985-952-7058 or visit www.stjohnsheriff.org to register. More information about National Night Out 2009 can be found at www.nationaltownwatch.org.
