The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced on May 15 that defensive end Kitwana Jones had been traded to the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for former Millsaps quarterback Juan Joseph in the transaction.
Joseph, an Edgard native and former standout at West St. John, had signed with Edmonton in March.
Roughriders head coach Ken Miller noted that Joseph, who had just signed with the Eskimos in March, was a star player during his college days. Joseph, 21, threw 32 touchdown passes in his last season as QB at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.
Joseph becomes the fourth quarterback on Saskatchewan’s roster, joining returnees Darian Durant, Steven Jyles and Dalton Bell.
“He’ll come in and compete and we’ll just have to see how well he does,” Miller said. “Certainly he could figure into our depth as we go into the season.”
Under Joseph, Millsaps finished the 2008 season with its best record in school history at 11-1 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
He posted a career mark of 26-7 as a starter and commanded one of the top 10 offenses in Division III as a senior. He finished his career with a Millsaps and SCAC record 9,295 yards passing, with 87 touchdowns against just 27 interceptions. He completed nearly 64 percent of his passes. He also finished his career first all-time in the conference in total offense at 9,822 yards, surpassing the previous high of 9,359 yards from Trinity’s Roy Hampton from 1998-2002.
