Through 10 games, St. Charles’ offense just couldn’t seem to catch up to its stingy defense. In its 11th, both were potent, and the Comets’ first victory of the season followed.
Paul Cupit scored three goals and was also the winning goalkeeper as SCC toppled Helen Cox last Tuesday, 7-0.
Cupit, filling in at goalie for the injured Gerard Giangrosso, got to play offensively in the second half after his team built a 3-0 first half lead.
“It’s not often you’re the top goal scorer and winning goalie,” said St. Charles Coach Rick Woodroof with a laugh.
Karl Gommel scored two goals for St. Charles (1-10). Daniel Ballard and Jimmy Anton each added one.
After falling short against a slate of quality opponents, Woodroof says that it just feels good to get a win under his squad’s belt.
“It feels good for them, and to me for that matter,” Woodroof said. “We’ve been working on offense and shooting in the practices leading up to that game. It looks like it paid off.
“A win is a win, and it certainly gives our guys some confidence.”
Defensively, the Comets didn’t let up, despite the newfound goal support. SCC didn’t allow a single shot on goal to the Cougars.
SCC should be closer to full strength too soon – Giangrosso is back at practice, which should allow Cupit more opportunities to put the ball in the net as he did on Tuesday.
SCC returns to action on Tuesday, where it will travel to Riverside for the district opener for both teams.
