West St. John had to shake off some early rust, but the Rams collected their fourth victory of the season over Reserve Christian, 60-27 on Friday night in Edgard.

Jailyn Gordon scored 16 points to lead the Rams (4-2). Shantell Pablo added 14.

West St. John led 9-4 after a quarter, but struggled to make a big move offensively.

“We hadn’t played in a week,” said WSJ Coach Lester Smith, whose Rams were playing only their second game in two weeks. “I think we were still rusty, a bit off. We settled down after awhile, though.”

It showed. The Rams improved their offensive output in each of the next three quarters, scoring 15, 16 and finally 20 in the fourth.

WSJ led 24-12 at halftime, and 40-20 after three quarters.

Daysha Blount led RCS (3-10) with 13 points. Jamie Bolden added five.

The point differential in the second half allowed Smith to lengthen his rotation.

“We were able to play a lot of kids, and see them develop a little bit,” he said.

It was the second consecutive game that Gordon led the Rams in scoring.

She, along with Pablo, is making life easier for West St. John offensively these days, taking pressure off of center Kyla Morris, who has led West St. John in scoring since the beginning of last season.

“It’s been great for us,” Smith said. “If you double Kyla, Shantell can shoot it from the outside, and Jailyn is helping out on the boards. They’re helping us out a lot right now.”
