While the opposing Plaquemine Green Devils took the field at Lutcher on Halloween night, the Bulldogs’ offense may have been the scariest sight of all.
For the second time in three weeks, Lutcher rolled up more than 60 points as it defeated District 9-3A foe Plaquemine on Friday night, 67-28.
The Bulldogs (6-2, 3-1) only ran 40 total plays, but accumulated 483 yards of offense, including 315 rushing yards.
“As far as our offense went, it couldn’t pick a better time to come together,” said Lutcher Coach Tim Detillier. “I really liked what I saw.”
Lutcher’s Daniel Taylor rushed for 134 yards and scored four touchdowns. Quarterback Gavin Webster was 6-of-10 for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed seven times for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
Each team gained almost 500 yards of total offense — 483 for Lutcher, 471 for Plaquemine (0-7, 0-3).
Aside from its offensive production, Lutcher scored on an interception return and a kick return in the game.
Despite the final score, the game had a back and forth flow to it throughout the first half — Lutcher led 33-21 at halftime as each team moved the ball at will.
“It started as a track meet,” Detillier said. “Our defense started to play better in the second half.
“The good thing is, our defense carried us early in the season. On Friday, especially in the first half, our offense had to carry us. They responded. Our offense is starting to really click right now.”
Lutcher slammed the door quickly in the second half, scoring four unanswered touchdowns.
Gavin Webster started the half off by finding Reginald Jackson for a 19-yard touchdown pass at the 11:16 mark of the third quarter to make it 39-21.
Frederick Thomas stopped Plaquemine’s next drive by intercepting quarterback Albert Battiste and returning it all the way for a 75-yard touchdown. That made it 46-21.
Brandon St. Pierre capped the third quarter scoring with a 75-yard touchdown run, and Daniel Taylor added a 5-yard plunge in the fourth to make it 60-21. Taylor added a 78-yard kick return to cap the Bulldog scoring.
In the first half, Lutcher took leads on a 20-yard Taylor scoring run, and a 42-yard Jarvis Landry reception. Webster extended a 13-7 Lutcher lead to 19-7 via a Webster 1-yard touchdown run. Plaquemine’s Ryan Travis made it 19-14 with an 18-yard touchdown run.
Taylor and Travis would trade scoring runs, and Webster’s 2-yard rush for a touchdown would give Lutcher a 33-21 lead at halftime.
Travis rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns for Plaquemine. Battiste rushed for 123 yards.
