HAHNVILLE – St. Charles Sheriff Greg Champagne said that detectives in his office are aggressively investigating the vandalism of a section of the parish’s water-filled flood control tubes that help keep storm surge from hurricanes out of residential areas.

“It amazes me how senseless these people can be,” said Champagne. “It’s just really unfortunate that this childish act now jeopardizes the property of people living in this area.”

Champagne said the vandalized tubes were found near the end of Up the Bayou Road in Des Allemands. He said the tubes, which cost the parish an estimated $20,000, showed evidence of intentional damage.

“Someone just came along and shoved knives into the tubes,” said Champagne. “I can’t fathom why, but we are committed to finding the culprit or culprits any way we can.”

Detectives could not reveal any more information about the investigation, but said it is ongoing. There were no witnesses to the vandalism.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office at 985-783-6807 or 985-783-1145.
