For the tenth year, industries in St. Charles and St. John the Baptist Parishes will host the annual Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 31.
The goal of this event is to provide households an opportunity to properly dispose or recycle materials that are inappropriate for curbside pickup. Fred Goodson, event coordinator with Shell Chemical Norco Plant said, “We urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity. Clean out the hazardous materials from your utility rooms and sheds now so you can easily and properly dispose of these wastes on May 31.”
A site is available in both parishes for residents to bring household hazardous materials for proper disposal and/or recycling. In St. Charles, the collection location is at the School Board Office parking lot on River Road in Luling. In St. John, the collection location is the same as the last few years at the Plaza LaPlace Shopping Center at 1921 Airline Highway in LaPlace, across from Taco Bell.
With support from Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, this event is sponsored by the following companies as a community service: Air Liquide, Air Products, Bayou Steel, Chemtura, Dow Chemical Company, DuPont, DuPont Performance Elastomers, Entergy, Enterprise Products, Evonik Industries (formerly Degussa) Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Marathon Petroleum Company LLC, Monsanto, Motiva, Nalco, OxyChem, Shell and Valero.
Goodson explained, “We are looking forwarding to collecting household hazardous materials from our community again this year. Last year we collected 63,300 pounds from our two parishes.” He continued, “With 85 volunteers, we unloaded materials from approximately 493 vehicles. We recycled 40,095 pounds of materials that included 7,335 pounds of tires, 7,118 pounds of used oil and 6,010 pounds of batteries. ”
The materials which will be accepted include oil-based paint, latex paint, solvents, tires (limit five per vehicle and one delivery only), automotive and other rechargeable batteries, household cleaning products, acids/bases, used oil, antifreeze, aerosol cans, fluorescent lamps, pesticides, herbicides, scrap metal, major appliances and used computers and electronics. We cannot accept explosives, ammunition, infectious medical wastes, unidentifiable materials, compressed gas cylinders, radioactive wastes (smoke alarms), asbestos, high school lab wastes or commercial/governmental facility waste, including in-home business waste. There is a limit of five tires per vehicle.
