St. Charles softball coach Ty Monica was a bit concerned entering Saturday’s game with Hannan.

His Lady Comets had just throttled district rival Lutcher on Thursday, and he did not want to see a letdown.

Those fears were put to bed early. A five-run first inning gave starter Courtney Western more than enough cushion, as the Comets rolled to a 12-0 win in six innings.

“It’s tough to go out of district after a big win over a rival,” said Monica. “You never know how a team will respond. But we did what we needed to do. It wasn’t our best game, but it wasn’t our worse. We’re on the right path.”

Western improved to 4-4 on the year, going six innings and allowing only one Hawk hit. She struck out five and walked one.

Megan Musacchia was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Katie Reine was 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Ashley Trosclair was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Brooke Becker, Trosclair and Reine each knocked in runs in the first inning, before Musacchia’s RBI double brought home the fifth and final run of the inning.

St. Charles (10-5) led 8-0 after five innings, before scoring four in the top of the sixth to close the game out by the 10-run rule.

Errors plagued Hannan (9-4) in the first inning, allowing the Comets to seize control of the game.

St. Charles’ next challenge awaits on Thursday. District rival Brusly (10-3-1) arrives looking to put its stamp on district play with a win at SCC.

“They’re a quality opponent. We have to have three good days of practice leading up to that game,” said Monica. “Their starting pitcher is going to be one of the best we’ve faced, with a real good curve and riseball. Our hands are gonna be full for sure.”
