West St. John was riding high after its big win over then No. 5 East Iberville last Tuesday. But White Castle brought the Rams crashing down to earth on Friday.

The Bulldogs’ Generra Varmall scored a game-high 27 points as White Castle defeated host West St. John, 74-47.

White Castle outscored West St. John 28-12 in the third quarter, effectively putting the game away.

West St. John Coach Antoine Edwards said that he didn’t know whether last Tuesday’s tremendous win left his team to suffer a let down performance. All he knows is that he doesn’t want to see another like it.

“I’m not sure what it was, but we played terribly in every phase,” said West St. John Coach Antoine Edwards. “We didn’t execute offensively or defensively.”

Dray Joseph led the Ram (8-8, 1-1) with 15 points. Blake Comminie scored 10 and Carday Barnes added eight.

The win was the seventh in a row for White Castle (14-10, 2-0)

Edwards said that the combination of White Castle’s good shooting, along with a series of defensive breakdowns, spelled a loss for a Rams team that had won two of its last three games.

“White Castle’s got a good ball club,” Edwards said “The bottom line is, if you play like we did against a good team, you get beat, and we did.”

Rebounding was also a negative for West St. John.

“We couldn’t get an offensive board when we needed one,” said Edwards.

White Castle led 32-25 at halftime.

Edwards said that the important thing for his Rams is to put the game behind them.

“We have to regroup. I told them not to let one loss upset their whole season,” Edwards said. “There are six more games that will decide where we finish.”

West St. John will host district foe North Iberville on Friday, then visit Ascension Catholic on Tuesday. North Iberville lost its first district game, also to White Castle, 64-56.
