LAPLACE – St. John Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 40-year old LaPlace man who allegedly shot and killed one of his friends after an argument over the weekend.

Maj. Mike Tregre, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s office, said Clyde Madere Jr. was taken into custody Saturday evening after confessing to deputies that he accidentally shot at 39-year old Brandon Seagrave, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2006 Ford Pickup parked in Madere’s driveway.

According to a Sheriff’s Office report, the two men were involved in a verbal argument that took place inside Madere’s home in the 100 block of Tassin Court. After the argument got physical, Seagrave left the house, got into his truck, and began to back out of the drive way.

The report then says Madere, armed with a 20 gauge shotgun, followed Seagrave outside and advised him not to return. Madere said the gun accidentally went off, and the slug that was fired penetrated the windshield of the truck striking the steering wheel.

An autopsy report conducted Sunday said Seagrave was killed by shrapnel from the bullet, which punctured his heart.

Tregre said Madere was charged with manslaughter in the shooting. He was booked into the Sherman Walker Correctional Facility where he is being held on $150,000 bond.

Tregre said Seagrave’s homicide is the first of the year for St. John Parish.
