A tough slate of District 6-5A games made finishing the regular season with an undefeated record look very difficult for Class 5A top seed Destrehan.

But for the last month, the Wildcats have made it all look too easy. And if they can do that once more, they can call themselves the undefeated state champions.

Destrehan scored on six of its eight first half possessions on its way to a 59-7 Class 5A semifinal victory over Westgate, and are now on their way to the state championship game in the Superdome.

Jerico Nelson had a career day, scoring four touchdowns and adding 123 yards on nine carries to lead the Destrehan offense.

“We’re excited to be where we’re at. We’ve had one goal this season, and we have a chance to make it happen on Saturday,” said Destrehan Coach Stephen Robicheaux.

Destrehan will face defending 5A champion Acadiana at 7 p.m. in the Superdome on Saturday night.

Tim Molton caught six passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Jefferson completed 12-of-20 attempts for 236 yards and two scores. Jonell Wortham had 105 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

Nelson scored on runs of 7, 32, 1 and 3 yards in the first half. Jefferson found Molton for a 75-yard touchdown, the team’s third score of the game. It added up to a 38-0 halftime advantage for the Wildcats, who racked up 574 yards of total offense, while holding Westgate to 200.

“We felt we could move the ball,” said Robicheaux. “We did some things and produced some big plays early in the game. Things rolled on them from there.”

Destrehan’s high-powered offense is on fire, averaging 45 points a game through four postseason games. Destrehan rushed for 338 yards in the game, and its defense forced two Westgate turnovers.

Darrington Sentimore and Rufus Porter each had standout games for the Wildcat defense. Sentimore led the team with 10 tackles and added a sack. Porter notched nine tackles.
