St. Scholastica survived 29 points from St. Charles’ Brooke Becker to defeat the Comets 56-46 in a Battle on the Bayou Silver division game at the Alario Center on Tuesday night.
After each team finished in second place during pool play in the first round, the win allowed St. Scholastica to advance in the Silver Division’s second place bracket.
Brittany Roussel scored eight and Jennifer Julien scored six.
The Comets (4-3) fell behind 20-9 after the first quarter, but fought back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. But St. Scholastica got a number of key baskets and rebounds down the stretch to put the game away.
St. Charles Coach Erin Remondet said that rebounding was the team’s Achilles’ heel on Tuesday.
“Our lack of offensive rebounding really hurt us. We ran out of gas at the end of the game,” Remondet said. “We really did not do a good job on the boards.”
While Remondet admitted that the number of games the teams have played at the Alario Center in the past few days might have taken its toll, she said it did not excuse the loss.
“It may have worn us down some, but you still have to rebound and make your shots,” Remondet said. “I still think it’s a game we should have won.”
