As the state volleyball playoff brackets were announced earlier this week, Hahnville and St. Charles found themselves in a similar boat – district champions hosting a bi-district game. Thursday, the Comets and Tigers met at St. Charles for some fine-tuning.
The match saw a ton of back and forth action and three down to the wire finishes. In the end, Hahnville prevailed, 28-26, 25-21 and 25-23.
No. 16 seed Hahnville will host No. 17 seed Baton Rouge on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Division I bracket. The winner will face the winner of No. 1 Mt. Carmel and No. 32 L. W. Higgins.
No. 10 seed St. Charles (23-16, 8-0) will host No. 23 seed Baker at noon today. The winner will face the winner of No. 7 Cecilia and No. 26 Berwick.
Despite the loss, St. Charles Coach Brandy Ryan was encouraged by her team’s play against a quality Hahnville squad.
“I thought we finally played consistently, from start to finish,” Ryan said. “We looked good out there. We got to take part in some long rallies. A couple points here or there could have swung things.”
Ryan was happy with the performance of all of her players, but especially noted the quality performance of her seniors.
“Lauren (Coniglio) came up with some really big blocks in that match,” Ryan said. “Ashley Trosclair is hustling all over the court. Katie Tregre put down some tips for us. They showed a lot of leadership.”
“Everyone really played well. I was happy with the results.”
