District 6-III officially belongs to the St. Charles Comets.
The Comets earned that distinction Monday, fittingly on the team’s senior night. Led by seniors Lauren Coniglio, Katie Tregre and Ashley Trosclair, the Comets defeated district foe Plaquemine in three games, 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 to secure a perfect 7-0 district record – and a championship.
“It’s real exciting,” said St. Charles Coach Brandy Ryan, in her first year with the team. “I’m very excited for the kids, they wanted it badly. It’s been a while since St. Charles won a district title and this somewhat puts us back on the map.”
Most impressive about the St. Charles (23-14, 8-0) run is the way the Comets pulled it off – virtually rampaging through the district, only losing one game in seven matches – including two wins over a strong Lutcher team that was defending its 06′ district crown.
“Right now, as the end of the season approaches, we should be peaking,” said Ryan. “We accomplished one of our goals, which was to win district. But another goal of ours is to reach the Pontchartrain Center. That’s where our focus is now.”
In the Plaquemines win, Ryan counted on her seniors to provide leadership for the rest of the team, and Tregre, Coniglio and Trosclair responded.
“They stepped up,” Ryan said. “Their leadership came through. They also had fun out there, and that’s the important thing.”
St. Charles will conclude its regular season with a home game against Hahnville on Thursday.
