Trosclair, Gustafson shine in important victory

St. Charles volleyball coach Brandy Ryan says that her team hasn’t peaked yet. If so, that’s bad news for the rest of the Comets’ district.

A week after downing district rival Lutcher in three games, the Comets moved to 2-0 in district play after dispatching Brusly on Wednesday, 25-14, 25-8, and 25-22.

&#8220It’s important because now, at 2-0, others have to catch us, not the other way around,” Ryan said. &#8220That said, we still need to move forward.”

Ryan said last week’s win at Lutcher seems to have lit a fire under her team.

&#8220I feel like that really motivated us. We’re playing good defense, reading the floor well. We’re serving very consistently, only missing two to four a game now.”

Ashley Trosclair led St. Charles (15-6, 2-0) with 28 digs. Meg Gustafson had ten kills and two blocks. Lauren Coniglio had seven kills with two blocks. Courtney Western had two aces.

Ryan said that she has been preaching the importance of getting off to fast starts in these matches, with emphasis on winning the first game. In district play, that has been crucial to the Comets success, as the team has rode early momentum to a decisive win each time.

Against Brusly, the team won the first two games by a combined score of 50-22.
