Lutcher coach Tim Detillier had high expectations for his team this season coming off of its 3A state championship run. But one thing he did not expect was to be 3-0 to begin the season.
“If someone had told me we’d be 3-0 with the teams on this schedule, I’d have been elated,” Detillier said.
Lutcher’s first three games were all scheduled against quality 5A opponents. All were also victories, the latest coming over Thibodaux, 30-14.
Even in the wake of a championship, Detillier did not see such early season success coming.
“We lost 35 kids from last season,” he said. “I can’t say enough about these kids. I thought we had to have some early success with this bunch, but the type of success we’re having is surprising.”
Lutcher senior quarterback Blaine Gauthier was 24-35 for 319 yards and three touchdowns, with an interception. Gauthier also ran nine times for 35 yards with one touchdown. Senior wide receiver Marche Michael led the team in receiving with 10 catches for 137 yards. Reginald Jackson had four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs (3-0) dug themselves a hole early when Thibodaux’s Edward Francis intercepted Gauthier on a deflected pass and returned it six yards for the touchdown at the 8:18 mark of the first quarter. The extra point attempt was failed.
Gauthier gave Lutcher a one-point lead after scoring on a 15-yard run at the 6:00 mark, making it 7-6. Thibodaux turned it over on the ensuing possession, and on the first play of Lutcher’s next drive, Gauthier fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis Landry to make it 14-6.
With 25 seconds left in the half, Gauthier again threw a touchdown strike, this time a 32-yard pass to Jackson. Lutcher added a safety before the end of the half, making it 23-6.
Gauthier capped off the Lutcher scoring in the fourth quarter, making it 30-6.
