LAPLACE – St. John the Baptist Sheriff’s deputies arrested a LaPlace man Saturday after a lengthy pursuit involving a stolen vehicle.

Maj. Mike Tregre, spokesperson for the St. John Sheriff’s Office said Michael Cockerham, 19, 750 Bienville St., LaPlace, was charged with four counts of aggravated flight from an officer, four counts of resisting an officer by violence, one count of possession of stolen property, and one count of reckless operation of a motor vehicle. Tregre said Cockerham was released Sunday after posting $19,800 bond.

According to Tregre, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday when police received a call that a 1989 Chevrolet Silverado, reported stolen in June, was seen at Reserve boat launch.

Tregre said deputies patrolling U.S. 61 in Reserve observed a vehicle fitting the description, and attempted a traffic stop.

It was then that Cockerham led officers on a lengthy pursuit that ended in the 200 block of Historic East St. where Cockerham jumped from the vehicle. The truck crashed into a home located at 282 Historic East St. causing structural damage.

Cockerham attempted to flee, but was apprehended by a detective on the scene.
