After last week’s jamboree game with Riverside, St. Charles Coach Frank Monica said that his Comets would have to show vast improvement from that point to Friday’s game at South Lafourche.

And that performance certainly fit the bill.

Jonathan Cancienne rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns and Chris Ilski kicked three field goals as St. Charles defeated South Lafourche, 30-6.

&#8220There was a lot more energy, a greater sense of urgency,” said Monica, &#8220We’re so young, even some of our seniors haven’t had the chance to start, so it may take awhile to get it right. But there was great movement, guys bouncing around, gang tackling.”

Cancienne scored on runs of 35 and 11 yards in the first quarter to put St. Charles up 14-0.

Ilski hit field goals of 43 and 39 yards in the second quarter to extend the lead to 20-0.

Vincent Rollo tossed his first touchdown as St. Charles’ starting quarterback in the third quarter, as he found Alex Marse from 11 yards out, making it 27-0.

&#8220The offense took care of the ball, and the defense limited the big plays. It’s what we stress,” Monica said.

Much like in the jamboree, special teams played a huge role in St. Charles’ success. Ilski’s three field goals follow his game winner from a week ago. And following his kickoff return for a touchdown last week, Jonathan Cancienne made another big play in the return game, this time setting the Comets up with a 55-yard return.

&#8220Our special teams must be a strength, or we won’t be competitive,” said Monica.
