Garyville man gets host of charges

A Garyville man whom allegedly threatened a deputy with a knife after fleeing arrest by speeding and traveling against traffic in April was arrested peacefully on a warrant, the St. John Sheriff’s Office reports.

Officers attempted to stop Derrick Gauff, 20, of 113 Historic West St. in Garyville, on April 30 for a noise violation when he reportedly accelerated and drove in the wrong lane to escape pursuit, before he came to a stop and brandished a large knife at a deputy.

Gauff allegedly warned the deputy to stay back when the officer told Gauff that he was under arrest and attempted to put him in custody before Gauff sprinted away on foot.

Officers searched Gauff’s uninsured van to find an open bottle of beer and a pipe used to smoke crack cocaine, according to the St. John Sheriff’s Office.

Last Thursday the deputy Gauff escaped spotted him driving a 2000 Dodge Caravan in the 300 block of Historic East Street in Garyville, pulled him over and took him into custody immediately after he walked out of the van.

Authorities booked Gauff with a $39,500 bond for flight from officer, resisting officer by force, aggravated assault, carrying of a concealed weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, open container, possession of drug paraphernalia, loud music, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, driver must be licensed, safety belt use and no insurance and two counts of aggravated flight from an officer and two counts of contempt of court.
