HAHNVILLE – St. Charles Parish residents may soon become a little more familiar with the term “last call.”
Councilman Richard “Dickie” Duhe plans to raise an ordinance at the first council meeting in June to ban alcohol sales at bars and stores between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., matching the alcohol limits in St. John and St. James parishes.
“I’ve heard complaints about loud noise and fighting and all the disturbances,” Duhe said. “One of the complaints we have from a deputy is that people leave St. John and go to St. Charles.”
Residents won’t be able to vote on the ordinance, but will be given an opportunity to voice their concerns before the June 4 meeting and possibly for two weeks afterwards, if the council decides to hold the ordinance over to the following meeting.
More than 10 years ago St. John and St. James Parish introduced an ordinance to limit alcohol sales between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. St. Charles Parish has never banned alcohol sales at certain hours.
In other business, the council will vote on a pair of ordinances raised by Duhe at the next council meeting on May 21 to decrease the speed limit on several streets in Norco.
“I’ve had many requests from many residents in Norco to drop the speed limit. On our streets that run north and south we don’t have any sidewalks – they’re narrow and we feel it’s a hazard not only to children but anybody who walks.”
If the ordinances pass, the entirety length of each street listed will be lowered to 15 miles an hour from 25.
The roads named in the first ordinance are Washington Street, Wildrose Drive, Cathey Street, Diamond Road, East Road, West B Street, Marino Street, Marino Drive, Clayton Street, Clayton Drive, Barreca Street, Giacomo Street, Pine Street, Oak Street, Spruce Street, Sirs Lane, Payne Street, Honeysuckle Drive and Cedar Drive.
The streets in the second ordinance are Teal Street, Bethune Street, Short Street, Mistletoe Drive, Norco Street, St. Charles Street, West Pine Street, Vial Street, Highland Drive, First Street, Second Street, Third Street, Fourth Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street and Mule Street.
