DESTREHAN – In the midst of an apprehensive time for schools across America, the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office arrested a Destrehan student on Tuesday for allegedly threatening to set off a bomb at the school.
The student, 16, reportedly did not wish to complete an assignment and directed the alarming comments at a teacher before officers were called in to the school.
After a line of questioning police determined the teenager’s comments were disruptive and threatening and booked him for terrorizing and disturbing the peace with a $50,000 bond set by Judge Granier.
The administration is recommending that the student be expelled.
“We take all threats seriously and take appropriate action on them,” said Capt. Pat Yoes, a spokesman for the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office.
“I want to commend the administration as they acted quickly and appropriately to ensure the safety of all their students and employees,” St. Charles Parish Superintendent Rodney Lafon said.
The incident comes only 12 days after the gruesome shootings at Virginia Tech that left 33 dead and at least 15 injured.
The boy has since been released to his parents on a $5,000 cash bond.
