ESJ evened their district record at 1-1 with win over John Ehret Tuesday afternoon in Metairie, taking a 7-2 win over the Patriots to the Wildcats just behind Destrehan (2-0) and Hahnville (3-0).
The win for East St. John marked their first 5-5A win this year as coach Ryan Sims looks to turn the Wildcat program back to prominence.
“It used to be that East St. John was a storied program around here,” Sims said. “We’re working our way back towards that. If we can play our best ball, we can be competetive in the district race and get a decent spot in the playoffs.”
The Wildcats didn’t waste much time establishing themselves in Tuesday’s game, putting up four runs in the top of the second. They added one more in the fifth before Ehret cracked onto the scoreboard, sending it into the top of the seventh 5-2. The Wildcats gave themselves some breathing room with two more runs and Lionel Weston pitched ESJ through the final three outs.
Weston gave up five hits and kept Ehret scoreless through five innings in just his second start of the year. The Patriots managed to put up a pair in the sixth to cut the lead to three, but ESJ added security with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Weston got through the next three straight batters to secure the victory.
Donald Goff led East St. John in the win with two hits from the plate.
The Wildcats stand at 6-9 on the year as they are set to host West Jefferson today at 1 p.m.
